ABOUT TALISON LITHIUM

COMPANY HISTORY

Talison Lithium Australia Pty Ltd (Talison Lithium) is a West Australian based mining company formed in 2009.

We are a private company now owned by joint venture partners Tianqi Lithium Corporation / IGO Limited JV (51%) and Albemarle Corporation (49%).

Talison Lithium and its predecessor companies have been producing lithium minerals from the Greenbushes Lithium operations since 1983 and the Greenbushes area is recognised as the longest continuously operated mining area in Western Australia (circa 1888).

The mining and processing operations at Greenbushes have been upgraded and expanded over the decades to increase production and incorporate new technologies as demand for lithium minerals has grown.

Many of the senior management team and employees at Talison LIthium have been working at the Greenbushes mining operations for 20 to 30 years ensuring continuity and long- standing relationships with stakeholders including customers and the local communities surrounding the mining operations.

Talison Lithium commenced a $320m project to construct a second chemical grade lithium concentrate production facility and associated infrastructure in 2017. The official opening of the Chemical Grade 2 (CGP 2) facility took place in 2019. This more than doubled production capacity of lithium concentrates to 1.34mtpa.

Construction of a third chemical grade lithium mineral production facility at Greenbushes is underway.

The increased production will enable Talison Lithium to supply lithium concentrates for two new lithium hydroxide (downstream processing) operations at Kwinana (Tianqi Lithium/IGO Limited JV) and Kemerton (Albemarle Corporation) underpinning a large downstream lithium processing industry in Western Australia.

Timeline

Greenbushes Mining History
137 years and counting

Originally pegged for tin in 1888 by prospector David William Stinton on behalf of the Bunbury Tin Mining Company, the Greenbushes mining leases are the oldest and longest continuously operated minerals fields in Western Australia.

The ore body contains the strategic minerals tin, tantalum and lithium which have sustained mining operations undertaken by individuals, government and a number of different companies since 1888.

The initial tin discovery at Greenbushes in 1888 sparked the attention of numerous prospectors who flocked to the area in the ensuing five years and the district prospered until 1893 when a four- year slump in the price of tin caused a decline.

Prices recovered and from 1897 to 1910 the area experienced a period of unparalleled prosperity and by 1899 there were more than 2,000 mineral claims.

In 1900 a tin smelter with a crushing and dressing plant were commissioned with an output of 783 tonnes of tin in 1906. At that time there were around 1,000 miners working on the field with the town population listed in 1907 at 3,000.

In the decade from 1911 to 1920 dredging was the main form of mining but tin output fell dramatically in the 1920s during a period of depressed prices and rising costs.

Mineral production improved a little in the 1940s when the State Government assisted Greenbushes Tin Pty Ltd to produce tin and the strategic mineral tantalum.

In 1961 a new era began when Aberfoyle Tin NL was granted a temporary reserve over the area to explore the district for tin and tantalum minerals and a few years later Greenbushes Tin NL was established to dredge deep alluvial areas and set up wet and dry treatment plants.

Gradually the alluvial deposits which had been the mainstay of the area for more than 70 years declined and attention turned to mining the host pegmatite (hard rock deposit) for tin and tantalum.

The lithium orebody at Greenbushes was identified during an extensive drilling programme between 1977 and 1980 and within a few years markets were developed resulting in commercial development of the lithium minerals deposit.

The first lithium minerals production plant was built at Greenbushes in 1983 by Lithium Australia and several successful expansions were undertaken to increase production at Greenbushes.

The operations at Greenbushes (Greenbushes Tin NL and Lithium Australia) merged to become Gwalia Consolidated Ltd in 1990.

In 1999 Gwalia Consolidated merged with Sons of Gwalia Ltd and by 2001 a Tantalum Expansion Project had begun at Greenbushes.

In 2004 Sons of Gwalia Ltd went into Administration but operations continued at the Greenbushes mining operations.

In 2007 Talison Minerals Pty Ltd was formed

In late 2009 Talison Minerals was separated into a lithium focussed business (Talison Lithium) with the remaining industrial mineral assets owned by Global Advanced Metals Pty Ltd (tantalum miner).

Talison Lithium Pty Ltd is owned by Tianqi Corporation/IGO Limited JV (51%) and Albemarle Corporation (49%).
